SecurID® software token solution

For a sophisticated hacker or a determined insider it doesn’t take much to compromise a reusable password and gain access to resources that are off-limits. Passwords can be guessed or revealed via easily obtained password cracking products. The SecurID software token’s one-time passcode solution positively identifies users without reusable passwords.

  • The SecurID software token operates in conjunction with all Security Dynamics access control products. Authentication Manager network security software operates on a variety of UNIX® and Windows NT® platforms, establishing a protective perimeter around select network resources. The SecurID software token is used with Authentication Manager to solve real security problems: protecting dial-up access lines, securing hosts and/or applications, controlling network access via gateways and securing LANs and TCP/IP and TACACS networks.

Security Dynamics has developed relationships with many of the leading vendors of remote access products, Internet firewalls, ISDN access providers and PC security products. As a result, the SecurID software token operates with these partner client applications, allowing network managers the ease and convenience of using the SecurID software token with almost any configuration of hardware or software networking products available.

    The SecurID software token solution
The SecurID software token uses the same patented algorithm as the industry-leading SecurID hardware token. The algorithm seed is stored in the SecurID software token shell application. The SecurID software token offers both an automatic and a manual authentication process to its users, while seamlessly integrating into existing application login procedures.

    Automated login
The SecurID software token is delivered with a set of scripts that provide for automated login with industry leading remote access devices. When The SecurID software token is activated, the user is prompted to enter his or her PIN. The PIN is then combined with the current number generated by the SecurID software token, creating a passcode. The passcode is sent to the Authentication Manager and the server authenticates the user. At the user level, authentication is seamless, simple and fast. For the network administrator, the SecurID software token is a flexible and inexpensive security solution, operational in a wide variety of network environments.

    Manual login
In addition to the automated mode, the SecurID software token allows users to login and authenticate themselves manually. In this mode, the user manually starts the Windows Dial-Up Networking process, invokes the SecurID software token, sees a GUI similar to the familiar SecurID token, and is requested to enter the PIN manually through his or her keyboard or mouse. The resulting unique passcode can then be manually entered into the terminal window to complete the authentication process.

    Smart card support
The SecurID software token now supports qualified smart card environments, such as the SecurID 1100 series smart card. The SecurID seed record is securely stored on the smart card, along with multiple applications such as electronic purse and physical security access. The smart card communicates with the SecurID software token shell application on the user's PC to provide strong authentication and login automation (optional). As a result, SecurID software token users can benefit from one card that combines SecurID strong authentication and multiple applications.

    Application integration
The SecurID software token includes programming interfaces for scripting the SecurID software token’s use with other applications. Using these interfaces, the SecurID software token can be integrated with custom corporate menus and internally developed applications. For example, if a corporation requires its users to move through a menu of corporate services, the SecurID software token can be seamlessly integrated into the menu. This enables users to authenticate through familiar interfaces while affording network administrators the benefits of a security scheme based on one-time access codes.
