Canada - For a limited time only - between December 10, 2002 and March 31, 2003 - Bell Canada is offering FREE 802.11b wireless connectivity at select pilot locations across Canada! Bell Canada announced Bell AccessZone, a Wi-Fi hotspot pilot that will provide Canadians with wireless high-speed access to the Internet (Wi-Fi is short for Wireless Fidelity and is the most popular worldwide term for high-speed wireless local area networks in offices, homes and public spaces). During the three month pilot, Bell will convert a number of high traffic payphones and other locations in Toronto and Montreal into wireless Internet access points. This gives mobile professionals, business travelers and consumers with 802.11b enabled laptops or wireless handheld devices another convenient option to wirelessly access the Internet, e-mail and corporate networks in public locations.

Each Bell AccessZone hotspot communicates with an 802.11b enabled device over a wireless LAN, enabling users to make a high speed DSL connection to the Internet without the need for a physical landline connection. As long as a user is within a 50 to 200 metre radius of an AccessZone Wi-Fi hotspot, they can take advantage of Bell's public wireless broadband network services. Bell will finalize its competitive pricing structure based on the results of the three month pilot and other factors. The service is currently being offered free of charge with no time restrictions. Bell AccessZone is a secure service when used with a virtual private network (VPN) client and a firewall.

Canada - Founded in 2001, FatPort is the one of the first public Wi-Fi providers in Canada. Our focus is to provide the millions of mobile workers immediate high-speed access to their email, company's intranet, or any other internet activity they require. The advantage of our service is its ease of use. Unlike other wireless technologies, FatPort works exactly like your connection at the office - use your laptop or PDA just like you would at the office. FatPort subscribers simply open their web browser in any FatPort location, enter their password to login, and surf away.

Our FatPoint Intelligent Access Point is 802.11b Wi-Fi compliant. This is a mature, established network standard used in most wireless networking installations. Many Wi-Fi networks are in place already - either officially, or unofficially - and most laptops are shipped with compatible wireless technology as part of a standard configuration. Finally, as it lets our subscribes use their own wireless devices, there is little for them to learn - open up a web browser in any FatPort Location and surf away!

Access speeds are up to 40 times that of dial-up or cell phone modem rates. Moreover, 802.11b products are not facing the obsolescence common to so many other products - current plans for upgrading the standard emphasize complete backward compatibility. FatPort strongly believes in freely contributing to the wireless community. Our FatPoints all run CompactBSD - a custom distribution of the most secure operating system available, OpenBSD. We released this distribution on Sourceforge to the open source community, particularly for use in embedded projects.
